One word that often gets misused is related to occupations.
Where did we get the term “サラリーマン”?
Salaryman” is not a proper English word.
If you ask the question, “what is your job?” why would you give
an answer that explains how you get paid ?
It doesn’t answer the question.
If you ask, “あなたの仕事は何ですか?”, you wouldn’t answer, “私は給料男です”.
This doesn’t describe your job.
The proper way to address this is to say,“I am a businessman
(or businessperson)” or
“I am an office worker”.
An even better way to answer is to use more detailed vocabulary.
Try “I work in ______.”
For example, “I work in finance” or “I work in engineering”
or “I work in computer programming”.
It’s always nice hear a direct answer.
Direct answers are simple and easy to understand.
