Did you know that the word “fry” is generally misunderstood
and used incorrectly? In Japan, most Japanese think that this
word means to “fry in oil” like, “EBI-Fry” or “KAKI-Fry”. Actually,
this is incorrect. The word, “fry” means to “heat (やく) or saute
(いためる) in a skillet or frying pan”. The correct term is “deep-fry”
or “deep-fried”.
This came to be because the words “fried chicken” became common
as an alternative to “鳥の唐揚げ”. What many people don’t know is that
the style of fried chicken that comes from the American south
(Kentucky, Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia, Tennessee). In the
American south, most housewives use a frying pan instead of a
deep-frying pot. So when fried chicken first came to Japan, many
Japanese thought that “fried” meant “揚げる”.
