Today I’d like to talk about one of the mistakes
that is often made with “Japanese-English” or “和製英語”.
The word is “Supermarket”.Now the reason the word “super” begins
this word is because originally there were only specialized markets
in the past (fish market, fruit market, and etcetera).
The idea to put all of these markets in one building created the
first “super-market”.
In Japan, the word “market” is thrown away, leaving only “Super”
(ス―パ).
This is something that will not be understood in America, Canada
or England.
The accepted name is “Grocery Store”. “Groceries” refers to food
you buy to make dinner for yourself or your family.
The next time you go shopping, remember that this store is a “supermarket”
or a “grocery store” and not a “suupaa”! |
